I won’t lie—I’ve thought about quitting Substack almost every day. Everyone’s idea of success is different, but I looped how-to guides, adopted formulas, ripped out pieces of paper, drafted punishing schedules—until any heart I had for this project blinked out. Each day I’d stare at my notes, then return to the app: Tell me what I’m doing wrong.
Keep it simple, said my husband. You don’t have to be the best here. You just have to be you.
I wish I were the kind of person who gets things right straight off the bat, but I’m very much a fuck-around-and-find-out kind of girl (degrees, diagnoses, marriages—collect the set!). So I fucked around for about six months, learned a few things that worked (and a whole lot that didn’t), and found out that my publication needed a bit of continuity.
I loved the word pareidolia—borne from my love of abstract art—but over time it was clear that I was writing about more than that.
So. I took a deep breath and phoenixed.

Thank you, as always, for being here with me. xx
